Bowl of Olives – a Still Life Value Study

olives

A value study in black and white chalk, on of the later ones of the 100 Still Life Drawings series.

In this one, I experimented a little with creating a subtle glow around the edge bowl, to see if it created a stronger feeling of light.

Getting the values for the two different kinds of lives was a challenge too. I often feel that if you can make a value study really sing by getting the relationships right, you can almost see the colour. Value really is most of colour. If you can build your values skills to a high level through your practice, colour will come much more easily to you.
