One of the biggest problems facing realist artists is mixing colour.

You might be able to see the colour, but mixing the exact colour you want is something else entirely. And it's not surprising, because our tube pigments seem designed to make the job of colour mixing more difficult.

For start, they vary widely from one manufacturer to another. Yellow ochre from Michael Harding or Williamsburg can be a completely different colour than a yellow ochre from Winsor and Newton.

So it's impossible to give recipes for specific colours.

And trying to darken or lighten a colour to create light and shadow can produce very unpredictable results. It's the same with complement mixing. You never quite know what you're going to end up with.

What we need is a method of colour mixing that is reliable, works independently of tube pigment names and helps us get to the colours we're trying to reach with less bother - so we can stop struggling with the palette and just get on with painting.

If you ever find yourself wasting time on the palette, trying to mix a colour and getting and further away from it, that's the problem this course is designed to solve.

Mixing with Munsell

On this course you'll learn to use Munsell to get to the colours you want quickly and easily, without the usual guesswork on the pallette.

About The Mastering Mixing Course

In this course, you'll learn:

  • an approach to mixing that lets you mix the colours you see with complete accuracy
  • how to use the Munsell approach to colour to simplify colour
  • a deeper understanding of your tube pigments and what you can achieve with them

The Mastering Mixing course takes everything I've learned about colour mixing and puts it into a series of easy to follow, simple exercises that will help you learn more quickly.

The course is light on theory, with all the emphasis on doing.

Each one of the series of mixing assignments will teach you a new aspect of colour mixing, helping you develop your colour mixing skills, and you can upload your assignments to our private facebook group for feedback.

Who is this for?

This course is for realist artists who struggle with mixing colour in oils. If you find yourself spending more time on the palette than on the painting, hunting around for colours and not finding them, this course is for you.

Can I do the course at my own pace?

Absolutely, yes. It's an online course and you have lifetime access to the materials, so you can fit it in whenever you like. Fast or slow, it's up to you. I'll always be available to give you personal feedback and answer questions.

What will I need?

You'll need a copy of the Munsell Student Colour Set and a range of oil paints (Windsor and Newton is fine) and a few other bits and bobs: some card, some acrylic primer, and of course a palette, palette knife and brushes. Here's the full materials list for the course.

What people say about my learning materials

I'm committed to helping you achieve your artistic goals. This course is new, but I already run an online Mastering Colour course which includes much of the material from this course. Here's a few comments from people who are on that course:

Mastering Colour Course:

The course has been truly first class - one of the best investments I have made in relation to art for many, many years.

Paul's teaching style is thorough, kind and encouraging. The progression of each module has been particularly well considered. I have no hesitation in heartily recommending any of Paul's courses and I only hope that there will be more courses that I can take with him once I have completed this one.

- Carmen Bowers

If you struggle or lose confidence when working in color you will be amazed how the Munsell system works.
There are exercises clearly explained to mix color and even with a clearer understanding from taking the course, I do the mixing and just laugh in amazement at the results.

You will love what you learn from Paul; an excellent teacher, always answers your questions and gives honest critique to keep you on the right path.

- Bernie Bombadier

I am surprised by the unbelievable amount of progress I've made in : mixing colors, judging hue, value, chroma, painting edges, controlling light and setup, making my practice regular, less stressful and giving me the tools to explore and cope for myself. Paul saved me a few years of struggle and I can never be thankful enough.

- Pejmann Amiri

If it wasn't for you I would still struggle with trying to mix the colors I want.

There are many color courses and color recipes on the internet but through your course I now have the method and confidence to mix my own colors. Also it is very helpful to watch you, how you think about color and how you perceive it.

- Sylivia Laiou

"Before this course I had an intuitive way of colour mixing, was a layman of the thou-shall-not-use-black-paint church, and was messing around with complimentary colours to get the exact shadow colour.

Paul's course provided me a systematic route to mix any colour. It also taught me to slow down and focus on one aspect of the painting process. Although I initially underestimated the time needed for the exercises, the approach of the course is actually well-balanced: it is challenging without becoming frustrating.

Pauls style of teaching contributes for me to the success of this course, as he challenges you to get the best out of yourself with personal and constructive feedback.."

- Bert Van Der Laan

"The Mastering Color course is the most thorough and well thought out learning experience I’ve ever had. Paul explains every step and you feel he is right beside you helping you along the way."

- Judy Warner

"Your Master Colouring Course is Unique and Fundamentally important for anyone who wishes to gain an understanding of colour.

The structure, content, and step-by-step process of the course, informs and demonstrates to students what needs to be learnt and understood about colour in a practical hands-on way.

I have, and will continue, to highly recommend the Master Colouring Course by Paul Foxton to those I meet in the Art World. "

- Christopher Heaphy

I also produce video tutorials on different aspects of painting- mostly colour. Here are some comments from people who have learned from my videos:

Video Tutorials

"Thanks to Paul Foxton for his excellent videos explaining the Munsell system. One can never learn enough about color."

- Kathleen Speranza

"I finally got to watch Paul Foxton's flower painting video and it was so worth the wait. It's a hands-on, practical, common sense approach to learning to paint and making something very beautiful at the same time. Loved it."

- Amanda Williams

"I downloaded it, and really really enjoyed it, Paul. You are a wonderful teacher, and have worked really hard to make your videos accessible to all levels."

- Nina Gagarin

A little about Me

profile-pic-sm-sq

I'm a representational artist, concentrating on realistic still life. I've been blogging about my artistic journey at my site  "Learning to See" for over ten years, and have built up a regular following of over 10,000 aspiring artists.

When I started out, my work was rough. But with practice and a lot of hard work, I learned what it takes to paint realistically. My work improved.

My journey was a long and hard one, figuring things out for myself. Colour was the single most difficult thing I had to learn - and also the one that made the most difference to the quality of my work.

Pricing and Enrollment

Please note that you need a copy of the Munsell Student Colour Set to do this course, which has to be bought separately. The latest edition is $73 on Amazon. You can also get the earlier edition 3 for around $60 or the second edition (which is fine for the course, and the one I use) for around $35.

The course is a one time payment of $59, for lifetime access to the course materials.
