Topic: Simplifying Values down to light and shadow
In this session, we’ll be using a version of the same reference photo, but this time we’ll be producing a simplified value study, focusing as always on simplification of the form, but with the added challenge of an accurate value balance.
It would be a good idea to have the subject roughed in with a straight line block in as we did in the first exercise yesterday. You can use the photo with the grid from Monday’s session for drawing out.
Also, have a 5 step value scale mixed and ready as detailed in the video I sent last week:
Here are two reference photos. Both have a value scale. The pixelated version is to help you find the values more easily. If you have a porogram like photoshop or somethign similar, you can use a colour selector tool to find where the values in each part of the subject are on the value scale.
If not, don’t worry – I’ll be showing you where on the value scale each of the main values is.
We’ll also be delving a little into edge handling. It’s amazing how much of a feeling of form you can create just with simplified values and edge handling.
