Session Five will be here on:
Tuesday 14th of September
at
6PM UK time (1PM Eastern, 10AM Pacific – check your time zone here)
What we’ll be doing
It’s time for paint!
We have a nice subject that we’ll be working with for a little while. In this first session with it, we have only one goal – to simplify it down to blocks of value and absolutely nail the values of those blocks.
Once we’re all happy that the value blocks are the right value, we’ll use this as a structure on which to start refining the forms.
What you’ll need
You’ll need an Ampersand panel, 8 x 10 inches to work on.
Also the following tube paints:
- Titanium White
- Ivory Black
- Raw Umber
Also please make sure you have some linseed oil and a solvent – turpentine, gamsol or similar.
For brushes, a selection of what you’re used to will be fine. If you haven’t done much painting, have a selection of hog bristles ready. You might also want a couple of soft synthetic flats.
I’ll be going through the value scale mixing live, but you will of course need your Munsell value scale to use as a guide. If you want to practice it, have a look at this video on value scale mixing (although we’ll be mixing more of the values in the session.)
Preparation
Just have all your materials ready and your panel set up on an easel and ready to go – we’ll do everything in the live session.

If you prefer to print it out, make sure to select the option in your software that prints it actual size – it will be “100%” or “actual size” or something similar. It should print out 8 (height) x 10 inches.
