What we’ll be doing
This week, we’re going to put together the last two sessions – the value study and the mixing – and make our first colour study.
This session’s piece will still be highly simplified, so what we’re aiming for is a colour version of the value study.
Once your study is done, you should be at home with the most important colours we need to mix to make this painting. Although the study will be simplified and a “big picture” block in, putting the colours on the right place and adding a little edge handling should be enough to begin to create a feeling of depth, light and form.
What you’ll need
10 x 8 inch ampersand panel
Linseed oil and your solvent of choice
The same brushes you used for the value study: a few hogs and a synthetic flats, about half inch, will be fine.
Tube paints:
- Titanium white
- Lead white
- Ivory black
- Raw Umber
- Quinacridone Rose
- Magenta
- Ultramarine blue
- Phthalo green
- yellow ochre
- bright yellow lake
Preparation
Please have the colours from session three and those from the additional mixing video mixed and ready to go before we start, so that we can get straight on with applying the paint!

Click here for an image of the palette with the Munsell numbers for each colour.
I’ve included guide chips for the student book for people that are using that version. Along with the mixing videos, these chips will help you get close to the colours we need. Make sure you get the values bang on, the chromas as close as you can, and guesstimate the hue using the chips as a guide.

The Munsell books don’t go as low as we need in value for the pot, so we get as close as we can. We can at least mix A lighter colour where the reflection of the cloth shows on the pot.

We’ll mix the greens for the leaves on the fly. I have a nice recipe I use for leaves which I’ll go through in the session
