How confident are you with colour?

How happy are you with the realism of your pieces?

For realist artists, getting colour right is the key to creating beautiful, engaging pictures. Painting with more natural colour – more accurate colour – will make your subjects come alive on the canvas, appear physical and solid. It will also give your paintings depth and light.

But getting colour right isn’t easy:

  • There are a lot of myths about how to paint colour that simply get in your way. Warm and cool. Mixing with complements. Restricted palettes and primaries.
  • Simultaneous contrast makes it extremely difficult to judge colour correctly, if you rely on your perception alone.
  • Colour differences are often very subtle, particularly in chroma, and very easy to overstate – in fact the most common beginner error with colour is overstating relationships.
In over two hours of video demonstration, I’ll take you through my approach to colour in detail, showing you :

  1. How to reliably judge the colours you see correctly – it’s actually quite simple
  2. How to mix any colour you see with absolute accuracy, quickly and easily – assuming the colour is within the range of paint of course (not all colours you see are).
  3. How to take those colours and use them to create convincing form and light in your pantings.

I’ll demonstrate three exercises that will help you unlock colour and take control of your palette, and then show you how to apply the principles learned to painting in the real world.

What’s more, you can get all the videos that make up this demo – over two hours of clear, uncomplicated demonstration – for any price you like.

You can download them for free if you can’t afford to make a donation, but if you can donate, I’d really appreciate it. It will help me continue to put out instructional videos like this. I’d suggest something between $20 and $30.

I finally got to watch Paul Foxton’s flower painting video and it was so worth the wait. It’s a hands-on, practical, common sense approach to learning to paint and making something very beautiful at the same time. Loved it.

Paul Foxton puts so much info and advice into these videos. Generous to a tee. Well worth a view.
