The Mastering Colour course is split into 5 modules:
Module 1: Organising your set up
You’ve already seen this as part of your free trial, of course, so you already have an idea of how the course interface works.
Module 2: Seeing Colour Better
This part is all about developing your sensitivity to colour. I’ll show you a little-known colour mixing method that lets you absolutely nail the colours you see. Never struggle to match a colour again.
Students love this module! Just seeing yourself exactly match some hard-to-mix colours is extremely empowering.
Here’s a sample video from this module, showing how to mix a high chroma green (high chroma colours are the most difficult to mix)
Module 3: Mastering Light and Shadow
In this part we move on to painting actual studies of real life objects.
Armed with your new found colour mixing skills and a couple of simple (but powerful!) tools, I’ll show you how to paint what you see.
This module starts with value studies, like this:
And then moves quickly on to colour studies, like this:
And this:
These studies are built up carefully in an easy-to-follow series of steps:
First, we accurately judge the colours:
Then we mix those colour accurately. Each of the colours we mix corresponds to one of the five main modelling factors. Here’s a few screenshots from one of the videos in this module:
Here are the modelling factors drawn out on the sphere:
When the colours are first painted in, they look like this:
Then you’ll bring the studies to a finish, safe in the knowledge that the colours are right.
Once you’ve mastered the assignments in this module, you’ll be able to use colour to model form. This module is really the heart of the course.
Module 4: Making it Come Alive
In this module, we translate the learning so far to real things – fruit – not just cubes and spheres.
The easy to follow, step by step exercises in this section will help you paint something that looks real, and build your confidence ready for the final module
Module 5: Paint with Masterful Colour
This is where it all comes together. The skills you’ve developed that let you accurately judge and mix colour, know how to use colour to create believable light and shadow, create a feeling of space and depth – they all come together in the creation of a still life painting.
I used exactly the methods outlined in this course to paint these two still lifes.
There’s also the private facebook group where you can upload your assignments for feedback, ask questions and just chat about what you’re learning.
Now of course, it takes practice to paint well and master colour. And creating beautiful work requires the synthesis of many skills.
You need to be able to draw reasonably accurately, for one. If you’re a beginner at drawing, this course isn’t for you. You’d be much better off building your drawing skills before you launch yourself into the exciting world of colour.
Trust me on this. I did it the wrong way round when I learned, and I had to go back to the beginning and start again!
But if you’re already drawing reasonably well, this course will show you how to accurately judge and mix colours, and where to place them to model form and paint realistically and beautifully.
Now I’m not going to tell you that this course is easy. It isn’t. But it will help you master colour, that I promise you.
If you’re ready to take your painting to the next level, click the button below and sign up. I’d love to share what I know with you.
The course is $199.
