Session five will be here on:
Monday 4th July
at
6PM UK time (1PM Eastern, 10AM Pacific)
Just pop back here when we’re due to start.
What we’ll be doing
We’ve established out big shapes now, and our main value blocks.
We have the foundation colours in.
And we’ve softened all the edges.
The main focus of this painting is the flowers. The last thing we want now is to spend too long on the vase or the stems and leaves – we don’t know how much of those things we need to paint until after we’ve refined the flowers more.
So this session will about going into the flowers and:
- Refining the edges
- Refining the smaller forms
- Varying the colour
We’ll be working slowly and carefully in this session, and judging how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go throughout the session.
Everyone has a different idea of how much detail and refinement makes a painting loook finished. It’s an aesthetic choice, and yours will very likely be different than mine.
But try in this session to see how little you can get away with and have a strong feeling of form and light.
What you’ll need
Your painting from last session. Make sure it’s touch dry before you start, we’ll be oiling out all over the flowers before we begin.
Medium – solvent and linseed oil.
The brushes you prefer. I’d recommend mostly synthetic flats, half inch or bigger. We’re still working on bigger shapes, even though the main mass is established. Don’t go too small too soon!
Paints:
- White (lead white is better but titanium is ok too)
- Cadmium yellow (cad yellow pale if you have Winsor and Newton)
- Cadmium yellow lemon
- Green gold
- Transparent red oxide
- Quinacridone rose (possibly – have it ready just in case. Whether you need it will depend on the paints you have)
- Yellow ochre
- Raw umber
- Ivory black
- Phthalo green (I’ll be using Winsor and Newton Winsor Green, Yellow Shade)
Your Munsell book and value scale.
Preparation
Please have the folowing colours from session three pre-mixed before the session starts:
- 10YR 9/2
- 10YR 7/2
- 10YR 4/2
- 5Y 9/4
- 5Y 7/4
- 5Y 4/4
Have a look at the video from session three to see how to mix these colours.
It would also be handy to have these neutrals mixed. As long as the chroma is just really low they don’t have to be perfect neutrals, but do make sure the values are right:
- N9
- N7
- N4
Here’s a video on mixing neutrals.
And also the orange for the centre of the roses:
- 5YR 6/8
We might want to go a little toward green in some of the shadows but we can do that on the fly.

Please have this photo downloaded to whatever device you’ll be using to paint from, and opened in time for the session.
Live chat
There will be a live chat box beside (or underneath, depending on your device type) the live video. There’s no need to log in or enter an email adress, just set a name and you’re good to go.
You can use the live chat to ask any questions you might have as we go along. You can even post pictures there if you’d like instant feedback on what you’re doing if you’re painting along.
