Session one will be here on:
Monday 6th June
at
6PM UK time (1PM Eastern, 10AM Pacific)
Just pop back here when we’re due to start.
What we’ll be doing
We’re going to be beginning by taking a complex subject – the one above – and looking at how we can simplify it down into general shapes of light and shadow, using value only.
We’re beginning with a value study because that will allow us to concentrate on the most important aspects of this skill:
- Simplifying the values
- Deciding on a general value for each area
- Drawing out each area accurately
- Handling the edges
That’s already quite enough for one session!
If you want to have a look at an effective method for softening edges, click here for a video demonstration of the method I most often use.
The session will last two to three hours, there will be 10 minute breaks every hour.
The session will be recorded and the video will be posted on the course site the following day. I’ll send you an email to let you know when it’s there.
What you’ll need
A pre-mixed five step Munsell value scale – click here to see a video on how to mix it.
A 10 x 8 inch Ampersand gessobord panel or similar.
Medium – solvent and linseed oil.
Brushes.

Please have this photo downloaded to whatever device you’ll be using to paint from, and opened in time for the session.
Live chat
There will be a live chat box beside (or underneath, depending on your device type) the live video. There’s no need to log in or enter an email adress, just set a name and you’re good to go.
You can use the live chat to ask any questions you might have as we go along. You can even post pictures there if you’d like instant feedback on what you’re doing if you’re painting along.
