The secret to painting light is painting shadows well.
And nothing destroys the realism of a painting like badly painted shadows.
I see so much of this, I’ve put together a webinar just on painting shadows. If you’ve ever struggled to judge the colour of a shadow and to paint it so that it looks believable, this webinar is for you.
Why is it so hard to get shadows right?
One of the main reasons that painting shadows is hard is simultaneous contrast. It makes it very, very hard to judge the values correctly – without a lot of practice and trial and error.
The next most common reason I see is hues going walkabout – if a shadow is the wrong colour, it simply won’t look convincing.
Myths: There are a lot of strange ideas about shadows that simply don’t reflect what we see. I’ll be covering a couple of those, too. But here’s a hint: there is no “one size fits all” for shadows.
What you’ll get:
This webinar will show you how to paint shadows that look real and help the objects (whether it’s things or people!) look convincing and occupy a believable space.
I’ll demonstrate a simple but effective method of judging the value of a shadow in relation to the light, and also show you how to make sure you get the hue right so that the shadow looks real. I’ll paint a couple of studies live to show you how it’s done – and also how it’s done wrong! I’ll also show you something you can do to increase the drama of your paintings.
When:
Thursday 12th January at 1PM pacific time, 4PM Eastern time, 9PM UK time.
Yes, there will be a recording that I’ll email out to people who register, so if you can’t make it, just register and you’ll get a link to the replay.
