Colour is perhaps the most important aspect of realist painting.
Good colour shows form, gives your paintings depth and life and makes the objects in your paintings come alive.
But it’s also the most difficult.
I struggled for years with colour. I would look at the work of artists I admired, and wonder what it was they knew that I didn’t that let them paint so well.
Using Munsell to learn about colour was my turning point. It gave me an understanding of colour that helped me start to create more beautiful work. It’s not the only way to learn about colour, but I think it’s the most effective and efficient.
There’s a been a lot of talk on art forums about Munsell and how useful it can be for realist artists. But it’s not easy to find practical advice on how to apply it.
A Munsell Painting Demonstration
- Accurately judge the local colours of the subject
- Find the colours you perceive, and then…
- Mix them accurately on the palette
- I also show in detail how to use the pre-mixed colours to create a flower painting – from first stages right through to the finish.
I’ve never covered this method in such detail before. There are no gaps, it’s all here: everything you need to start using Munsell to understand colour better and make more realistic, more beautiful work.
You can get all eight of the videos that make up this demo – an hour and a half of detailed demonstration – for any pice you like. You can download the videos for free if you like. I know a lot of artists don’t have spare money for training.
But if you can afford to make a donation, I’d really appreciate it and will help me put out more instructional videos like this. I’d suggest something between $20 – $30.
Here’s a few comments from artists about my instructional videos:

A little about me:
I’m Paul, a (mostly) self-taught artist, creating realist still life paintings. I run an online drawing practice program for aspiring artists and produce free webinars on various aspects of still life painting in oils.
I blog here for over 5000 subscribers about representational painting and drawing. Here’s some of my recent work:
