Self Portrait, 10th December 2005

self portrait 10th December 2005

Sixth in the series – a self portrait a day until Christmas.

An odd one this. I absolutely intended to sit down and do a charcoal tonal drawing, but this came out.

Basically this is an exercise in measuring, a life drawing more than a portrait. I’ve just been readingthe chapter in ‘Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain’ about the sighting skill. I first learned to do thisback on my foundation course, where they taught us some actual drawing skills. I’ve been using it hereand there since I’ve started work again, but not as much as in this drawing.

Overall I suppose it’s not a bad drawing, but the hand really bugs me. It seems to hover in space insteadof resting on the thigh.

It’s a pretty crap photo of the drawing, but to be honest I couldn’t be bothered since it was just anexercise really. The two vertical lines either side of the figure are the edges of the mirror, a tall one standingon the floor.
