We all want to be able to create beautiful work. And the main thing you need to paint beautiful realism is good colour. If the colour is natural, well observed and mixed accurately, the painting comes alive.
But what happens much more often is that colour becomes a struggle.
Mixing is confusing, the colours often coming out “chalky” or “muddy”. A hope-for-the-best approach to colour produces lifeless, unrealistic work.
Worse, more time is spent struggling with colour than actually thinking about the work itself.
It doesn’t have to be that way
What if, instead of struggling with colour, you knew how to produce rich, vibrant, natural, accurate colour?
What if you had a method that ensures that you never produce muddy or chalky colour again?
When you can paint with natural colour your paintings have depth, space and light. Instead of spending your time struggling with colour, you’re free to concentrate on making more beautiful art.
Painting realistically is largely about putting the right colour in the right place. The Munsell Colour Method will show you how to understand colour and use it to paint beautifully and realistically.
It will show you, in detail:
- How to mix colours accurately and exactly
- How to correctly judge the colours you see, despite problems of simultaneous contrast
- How to use colour to model form
When I was beginning I struggled a lot with colour. Discovering Munsell and working with it for several years took away the struggle and unlocked my painting. If you struggle with colour, I believe it can do the same for you.
Over five hours of video:
Part 1 – the basics:
- Introduction to Munsell and the method of bracketing colour
- Demonstration of bracketing value
- Demonstration of matching a low chroma colour, without using the Munsell book
- Demonstration of matching a high chroma colour
Part 2 – creating form with colour:
- Detailed description of how to set up a still life subject and balance the light
- Demonstration of accurately judging and mixing the colours of a sphere, and using them to paint a convincing study
Part 3 – A demonstration of a complete flower painting using the Munsell Method

What people say about my learning materials
I’m committed to helping you achieve your artistic goals. I run online courses, produce video series (like this one) and run a drawing practice membership program. Here’s a few comment from people who have tried some (or in some cases all!) of these.
Mastering Colour Course:
Paul’s teaching style is thorough, kind and encouraging. The progression of each module has been particularly well considered. I have no hesitation in heartily recommending any of Paul’s courses and I only hope that there will be more courses that I can take with him once I have completed this one.
– Carmen Bowers
There are exercises clearly explained to mix color and even with a clearer understanding from taking the course, I do the mixing and just laugh in amazement at the results.
You will love what you learn from Paul; an excellent teacher, always answers your questions and gives honest critique to keep you on the right path.
– Bernie Bombadier
– Pejmann Amiri
There are many color courses and color recipes on the internet but through your course I now have the method and confidence to mix my own colors. Also it is very helpful to watch you, how you think about color and how you perceive it.
– Sylivia Laiou
Paul’s course provided me a systematic route to mix any colour. It also taught me to slow down and focus on one aspect of the painting process. Although I initially underestimated the time needed for the exercises, the approach of the course is actually well-balanced: it is challenging without becoming frustrating.
Pauls style of teaching contributes for me to the success of this course, as he challenges you to get the best out of yourself with personal and constructive feedback..”
– Bert Van Der Laan
– Judy Warner
The structure, content, and step-by-step process of the course, informs and demonstrates to students what needs to be learnt and understood about colour in a practical hands-on way.
I have, and will continue, to highly recommend the Master Colouring Course by Paul Foxton to those I meet in the Art World. ”
– Christopher Heaphy
I also produce video tutorials on different aspects of painting- mostly colour. Here are some comments from people who have learned from my videos:
Video Tutorials
“Thanks to Paul Foxton for his excellent videos explaining the Munsell system. One can never learn enough about color.”
– Kathleen Speranza
“I finally got to watch Paul Foxton’s flower painting video and it was so worth the wait. It’s a hands-on, practical, common sense approach to learning to paint and making something very beautiful at the same time. Loved it.”
– Amanda Williams
“I downloaded it, and really really enjoyed it, Paul. You are a wonderful teacher, and have worked really hard to make your videos accessible to all levels.”
– Nina Gagarin
